Alcatraz Island  

Alcatraz Island located in San Francisco, California is an island with an area of 22 acres and is located 1.5 miles offshore. This National Park island had a little vegetations and became a seabird habitat since the 1755 exploration by Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala. Sold to the U.S government in 1849, Alcatraz was the site of the very first lighthouse on the coast of California during 1854. Other buildings were demolished on the island to build the first permanent army base which was garrisoned in 1858.

During 1861, the whole island later became a residence for military offenders. Later on Indian prisoners from the Arizona Territory was detained here due to passively resisted against the attempts of the U.S government to assimilate them.

Starring 1935 to 1963 it became a federal prison for some of the most dangerous civilian prisoners one of which were Al Capone, Robert Stroud, George Kelly. This prisoner was able to house 450 convicts in cells with about 10 by 4.5 feet.
